Large and thick 4to. Complete: (1)-(4), i4, (1)-(4), (5)4; a8, b6, c8, d6, e8, f-k6, l8, m-o6, p8, q-s6, t8, v6, x8, y-z6, A6, B8, C6, D8, E6, F8, G6, H8, I-L6, M8, N-Q6, R8, S-V6, X8, Y6, Z8, 2A8, 2B-2D6, 2E8, 2F6, 2G8 (lacking 2G8, blank). Full contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, front cover with outer and inner quadruple-fillet frames intersecting to form eight compartments between them, central compartment of inner frame with quadruple-fillet saltire, affixed with rubricated calligraphic label on vellum; back cover with quadruple-fillet frame forming central compartment with quadruple-fillet saltire; a few areas of loss, most notably 1" x 0.5" area on rear cover exposing board. Both stamped allover with multiple rondell (the Angel of Matthew, crown, double-headed eagle, Golden Fleece, griffin, lion rampant, stars, and winged lion), and small squarish monkey with mirror-like object stamps. Spine in five compartments separated by raised bands, each with diagonal line, third and fourth with star stamps (cracking along joints and raised bands, some loss at end). Seven (of 8) brass cornerpieces and two centerpieces, each with vegetal decoration and integral boss. Two clasps composed of metal catches and leather thongs (chipped, with core exposed) at foredge. Nineteen rawhide text tabs. Shelfmark "C. 4" on foredge. Lacking front pastedown; rear pastedown loose from board. Occasional dampstaining; occasional marginalia, text rubricated, with pilcrows, some capitals illuminated with silver (including at a1).
Every aspect of it, from the rawhide text tabs, to the vellum paste-over with the title on front cover, the brass corner pieces, and of course the idiosyncratic tooling is reminiscent of what a monastic binding should look like.
Provenance: Inked library stamp ("Ministerial Bibliothek Uelzen"); bookplate of E.P Goldschmidt (‘E[rnst] PH[illip] G[oldschmidt]’) to title page; Broxbourne Library.
