First English edition of Cervantes’ Novels

First edition in English of Cervantes’ Novelas Exemplares, arguably his most famous work after the Quijote and certainly the most reproduced during the 17th century; the English translation was prepared by James Mabbe (1572-1642), English scholar, translator and poet.

Folio, (260 x 160 mm). Modern calf antique. Fine copy, unsophisticated, occasional spotting and foxing as always, last leaf washed with residual soiling, overall in very good condition.


Provenance: 18th century signature of John William Chelcott of Cornwall crossed out on title page; Brent Gration-Maxfield copy, his signature and notes in pencil on front pastedown and flyleaf, and gilt-tooled bookplate; acquired from Seven Gables in 1972; Ken Rapoport Collection.
