Extraordinary Spanish Mosaic binding

One of the most beautiful Spanish 18th century mosaic bindings we have handled, this Kalendario is housed in an extraordinary Spanish binding, presumably by the binder to the King, Antonio de Sancha.

12mo. Contemporary white Morocco with inlays in colors adorned with ornate and silvered pewter motifs in the compigné style, under mica on the covers, red morocco frame decorated with small gilt irons, central medallion framed in red morocco with a gilt cut-out metal motif on a silver background: the offering to Love with the motto ‘Forever’ on the front cover; a woman beside a tripod and an altar carrying an urn, with the words ‘He will never return’ on the back cover; smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, mosaic-patterned compartments of morocco pieces of different colors adorned with gilt fleurons, blue tabis lining and endpapers, gilt edges.

Provenance: from the Grace Whitney-Hoff Library; born into a prominent American family, Grace Whitney-Hoff (1862-1938) settled in France upon her second marriage in 1900. In addition to her numerous philanthropic endeavors, she was a renowned bibliophile and amassed a collection of manuscripts, incunabula, rare editions, and antique bindings, for which A. Boinet compiled the catalog in 1933. This copy appears as number 492 of the second volume.
