(INCUNABLE) (CAILLAUT, Antoine, publisher)
Eruditorium Penitentiale, [Paris: Antoine Caillaut, circa 1487]."A CLASSIFICATION AND ANALYSIS OF ALL HUMAN DELINQUENCIES" (DAVIES): FASCINATING FRENCH ILLUSTRATED INCUNABLE, WITH A FULL SET OF STRIKING IMAGES REPRESENTING THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS
First edition of one of the most praised French illustrated religious works from the incunable period, featuring the first appearance of the 17 striking woodcuts specially designed for this work—representing among other things the seven deadly sins—rendered in outline with slight hatching: "the cuts rank among the earliest French examples of the art" (Davies). Hind singled out the woodcuts for their "expressive quality." The remarkable early representation of Death (a6v) recurs in Michault’s Danse des aveugles (circa 1495). Extremely rare, no copy recorded in institutions in the United States or North America. Handsomely bound by Bedford.SoldFurther images
