Some light foxing, namely to list of plates, plate 9 remargined ‘slave market’, fraying to outer margin of a folding plate, first folding plate with tear at fold not causing loss but entering two inches into image, occasional offsetting from plates into text, light foxing and toning, overall a very fine, fresh copy of this famed rarity.

'[O]ne of the most beautiful, and also one of the rarest, books published about Brazil in the nineteenth century' (Borba de Moraes).

The Views and Costumes portrays a wide variety of scenes, including architectural scenes, city views, landscapes, and local costumes, all drawn by Chamberlain during his stay in Rio from 1819 to 1820. Chamberlain was likely the son of Sir Henry Chamberlain, the Consul General from England in Rio de Janeiro from 1815 to 1829.

Provenance: M. Pimenta Camargo, bookplate on front pastedown ‘Constantia et Fortitudine’; Antonio Bonchristiano, bookplate on front pastedown.

Abbey Travel 707; Borba de Moraes I, 178; Tooley 178.
