8vo (208 mm x 135 mm). 5 ff., 337 pp, 2 [blanks]. Original red quarter-cloth, spine lettered in gilt and ruled in metallic red, red cloth binding, dust jacket with price of $17.95 on the front flap. Title page and facing page illustrated with map of New Mexico. Light foxing to edges, light wear to top edge of dustjacket, otherwise a fine copy in an unclipped jacket.

"Blood Meridian seems to me the authentic American apocalyptic novel, more relevant even in 2000 than it was fifteen years ago. The fulfilled renown of Moby-Dick and of As I Lay Dying is augmented by Blood Meridian, since Cormac McCarthy is the worthy disciple both of Melville and of Faulkner. I venture that no other living American novelist, not even Pynchon, has given us a book as strong and memorable as Blood Meridian" (Harold Bloom). Now praised as his magnum opus, the author’s fifth novel was published to lukewarm reception. Many first edition copies have remainder marks, while this copy does not, making it likely one of the first 1,883 copies sold. Original first issue dustjacket has the publisher's price present on the front flap.
