Exceptional copy from the libraries of Stuart de Rothsay and Sir Thomas Phillipps of the Noticia de la California by Jesuit Father Venegas

First edition, the first printed history of California, from the libraries of Stuart de Rothesay with his supralibros and Sir Thomas Philipps, a cornerstone work which comprises the areas of modern California, Baja, Sourthern Arizona and Sonora, here in a remarkable copy. The work deals with a variety of topics, including the natural history, geography, and local inhabitants encompassing the period from the discovery up to 1739. In many cases it is based on Venegas’ on experiences, and also on earlier sources, includes the novel method of questionnaires he sent to missionaries involved in the Missions. The third volume contains appendices by Burriel, dealing with the exploration of the Northwest coast and Father Fernando Konsag’s exploration.

Three volumes, 4to, (196 x 135 mm). Complete with the four folding maps. Fine 19th century calf with supralibros of Stuart de Rothsay, spines flat, tooled in gilt ith double lettering pieces, double gilt fillets to boards, somewhat rubbed and worn, volume two rebacked preserving the original spine. An exceptional copy, very clean and bright, restoration to one blank corner not affecting, occasionally foxing, one map with short tear repaired.

This is a fine example for many reasons: the provenance dates back to the 19th century to a remarkable British Diplomat who participated in Brazil´s independence from Portugal, it was owned by the Baron de Rothesay, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Portugal and Brazil (1810-1814), and then again from 1825 to 1826; it also belonged to the most famous bibliophile of the 19th century, Sir Thomas Philipps.

Provenance: Sir Thomas Phillipps, "MHC" and shelf mark on front paste-down; Charles Stuart, Baron de Rothesay (1779-1845), his supralibros on boards; offered in Sotheby’s, 2010.

Howes V69; Palau 358387; Sabin 98848; Wagner, Spanish Southwest 132.
