Sanz, Gaspar Francisco
First complete edition, of the “most comprehensive guitar treatise of its time” (TNG, xvi, 486), and the second book on guitar published in Spain, following a short treatise by Amat; to-date, an important record of what we known of classical guitar repertory and techniques. The first and second parts were published independently on 1674 and 1675; this is the first appearance of the third part and as a complete work.

4to oblong (296 x 214 mm). 4 ff., 12 pp., 18 plates, 10 pp., 1 ff., 12 plates, 1 ff., 10 plates. Contemporary limp vellum, recased, new flyleaves. A fine copy, second leaf frayed at bottom and slightly dirty, excellent condition overall, the plates in strong impressions.
Sanz (1640 – 1710) was an Aragonese composer, organist, and guitarist, born into a wealthy family of Spain, which likely accounts for his education in music, theology and philosophy at Salamanca University, where he later became professor of music. He studied under Lelio Colista (1629 – 1680) and was influenced by the guitarists Foscarini, Granata and Corbetta; after a period in Italy, when he met with the Italian masters, he went back to Spain, soon obtaining the position of teacher to Juan de Austria, illegitimate son of the King and actress Maria Calderon.
The contents include a complete guitar course explaining tuning, basso continuo, ornamentation and technical information about the rasgueado and punteado (strummed and plucked), pieces in alfabeto notation and Italian tablature including dances (Gallardas, Rugero, Zarabanda, Canarios, etc.); two of the plates illustrate the finger positions on the strings. Overall, it is an excellent example of the influence of rustic music in the baroque.
Each of the three parts deal with a particular subject, the first “Instruccion de musica sobre la guitarra española”, the second “Cifras sobre la guitarra española”, and the third “Libro tercero de musica de cifras sobre la guitarra española”.
