Finely illustrated Spanish Book of Hours bound for a woman and later banned
Exceptional printed Book of Hours for various reasons: the quality of its illustration, the provenance, the fine near-contemporary remarkable Renaissance binding, and for being in Spanish, arguably one of the rarest languages for printed Book of Hours (later condemned by the Inquisition), presented to Charlotte du Tillet, lady-in-waiting to Queen Marie de’ Medici. The rarity may be explained because the Iberian Inquisition decreed all books of hours heretical and singled out this edition. Accordingly, the market consisted entirely of clandestine imports from Antwerp, Paris and Lyon.
