Printed in the Mountains of Barcelona, at the Monastery of Montserrat, with the woodcut of the appearance of the Virgin that made it a pilgrimage site
One of the earliest books printed in the Monastery of Montserrat in the mountains of Barcelona, from the press of Johann Luschner; a rare Spanish incunable, illustrated with a lovely woodcut showing the appearance of the Virgin, which made the monastery a pilgrimage site.

Modern brownish calf, raised bands to spine, lettered in gilt and tooled in blind, only lightly rubbed. Some minor water staining, a few repaired worm holes occasionally touching printed surface, good condition overall.
Luschner, a printer from Barcelona, set up a printing shop in Montserrat in the winter of 1499 with the commission of Ximenes de Cisneros; the shop was relatively prolific, and in the span of a couple years published some 17 works, besides a number of indulgences –most of which are now lost or unknown. By 1501 Luschner was back printing in Barcelona. Gothic type, five-line woodcut initials, spaces for other initials with guide letters. Other books printed by Luschner include the Opus contemplationis, and the Tractatus de spiritualibus ascensinibus, both printed in 1499. Luschner´s impressions are praised for their beauty and correction.
The Otto Schafer catalogue entry for his copy of the Tractatus de spiritualibus ascensionibus says “The woodcut at the end, first appearing in this edition, is better interpreted as a publisher's device than as an illustration, although both Kurz and BMC treat it as an illustration (and Kurz misidentifies it as a metalcut). It expresses emblematically the mystical appearance of the Virgin which made Montserrat an important pilgrimage site.” (The Collection of Otto Schafer Part III: Illustrated Books and Historical Bindings, 6762-94).
According to ISTC, there are 20 copies in institutions worldwide, of which 5 (one incomplete) are in the United States, BPL, Harvard (defective, first 8 ff. in facsimile), LoC, Huntington, and Yale.
No copy has appeared at auction according to RBH; one has to go back to Otto Schafer´s sale in 1995 to find an example of a work by Luschner during his stay at Montserrat having sold at auction, other than an incomplete copy in 2006, missing the title with the woodcut –also of another work.
