First edition, very rare, one of the most celebrated and famous books of the Renaissance, illustrated with 41 woodcuts after the designs of Hans Holbein, which influenced for centuries the whole genre of dances of death.

4to, (177 x 125 mm). Fine 19th century red crushed morocco by Capé, faux raised bands to spine, compartments tooled in blind and lettered in gilt. Ownership inscription title, washed and pressed, some residual light toning, overall in excellent condition.

Exceptional provenance: early ownership inscription to title page “Rymsdyck [?]”, from the library of British collector Henry Huth (1815-1878); later his son Alfred-Henry (1850-1910).
