Xylographic printing by the Jesuits in China in the seventeenth Century.
First and only edition, printed by the Jesuits in Chine in the 17th century, containing memorials to the Imperial throne drawn after the persecution by Yang Guangxian; illustrated with a striking title in white on black, incorporating the Holy Initials and the instruments of the Passion within a sunburst, top is printed the word Innocentia and at the bottom Victrix. The text is in Latin and Chinese, and the whole printed on Asian paper. This is the third in a series of 11 books printed from xylographic blocks in various cities of China under Jesuit auspices between 1662 and 1718.

Folio, (290 x 190 mm). [2], 43 double leaves folded at the fore-edge; xylographic printing throughout, on native paper. Contemporary speckled calf, spine in compartments with gilt tooling, marbled paste-down endpapers, in gilt morocco solander case signed Kerstin Tina Miura. Plain brown wrappers (possibly original, certainly at least near-contemporary) bound in.
Provenance: Thomas Dampier (1748-1812), Bishop of Ely; Dampier was known for the library and collection of prints which he accumulated throughout his life. He left a bibliophile's account in Latin, the manuscript of which was used by Thomas Dibdin in compiling his Aedes Althorpianae; Chatsworth Library, engraved bookplate, bookcase 32, shelf C, on front pastedown.
