[Celestina] [Silva, Feliciano de].
The Segunda Comedia is a continuation of Celestina’s story, resurrecting her for more intrigue and matchmaking, it is not written by Rojas, but by Silva, a prolific and influential writer of chivalric romance in Renaissance Spain. First printed in 1534, all early editions of this “second part” are extraordinarily rare; it is dedicated to Francisco de Zuniga Guzman y Sotomayor Duque de Bejar. Silva is credited to have written continuations to the Amadis de Gaula as the Don Florisel de Niquea.

The Celestina is probably the most celebrated literary work in the Spanish language before the publication of the Don Quijote, “the first connected long story with a complete plot written in modern literature” (Maggs, cat. 495); it marks the transition between medieval and renaissance literature. The title “Celestina” instead of “Tragicomedia” would only appear in 1595.
Provenance: ownership inscription to title page “De la Mattiere”, and faded stamp “Le Coquereaumont – Sinclair”, somewhat toned as usual, else fine.
