4to, (290 x 230 mm). 2 ff., 378 pp., 1 ff., 30 plates (three in one plate), 10 of which in color, including two maps. Contemporary three-quarter marbled brown calf with marbled boards, raised bands, gilt-tooled spine with red leather labels, joints repaired, headcaps and edges refurbished. Uncut and wide margined, light foxing, plan of Santiago with tear to gutter not causing loss.
Schmidtmeyer’s is a rich iconographic record of Chile. The work contains a wide range of information regarding Chile, the local inhabitants of Chile and Arauco, agriculture and husbandry, mines and metallurgy, etc., all accompanied by a rich visual record.
This copy is complete of all maps and plates and has several of them in original color, as is almost always the case.
The illustration comprises a large folding map Santiago de Chile city, a folding map of the post road from Santiago to Buenos Aires, and 26 full-page plates portraying local costumes, city views, urban sceneries, etc., of which 8 are colored. They are by G. Scharf and A. Anglio after Schmidtmeyer and General J. Paroissien.
